A study conducted in Auckland, New Zealand has found that best electronic cigarette are only as efficient to help smokers quit tobacco as nicotine patches.
The final results were published in prestigious Lancet health journal – View study Documents , add weight to people who feel e-cigarettes should be welcomed as quitting smoking devices.
In one of the first randomized, controlled trials on e-cigarettes, 657 smokers were allocated either e-cigarettes, nicotine patches or nicotine free electric cigarettes (Placebo). After six months time, 7.8 percent of the using e-cigs abstained from cigarettes, then those using nicotine patches at 5.8 percent along with the placebo group at 4.1 per cent. There are very little substantial changes in adverse incidents seen between the three groups.
Dr Hayden McRobbie in the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit, Queen Mary University, and co-author from the Lancet study, said,
“The results were encouraging for smokers who want to try various ways to assist them quit.”
“At six-month follow-up, vapor e juice were a minimum of as effective as nicotine patches, but participants were more excited about recommending e-cigarettes to others, compared to the patch.
“There are a handful of obvious factors why. The e-cigarette does a better job of replacing some behavioural elements of smoking that numerous people miss whenever they quit (e.g. the hand-to-mouth dexhpky09 and the sensation of smoke with your mouth and throat), in addition to delivering nicotine.”
E-cigarettes, without or with nicotine, were modestly efficient at helping smokers to stop, with similar achievement of abstinence just like nicotine patches, and few adverse events. Uncertainty exists about the place of vapor e juice in tobacco control, and a lot more research is urgently needed to clearly establish their overall benefits and harms at both individual and population levels.
